So, full disclosure, Dillard Gates is my husband's uncle whom I didn't meet until about the mid 1980's when I joined the family, and maybe one or two times thereafter at boisterous family reunions which precluded any chance to discuss Dr. Gates many accomplishments and adventures with him.. But after reading this book (which I only learned about in Dillard's greeting to us this past Christmas), I realize it was fortuitous for us to have met at all. Nephew (one of many) John and I traveled west every other year or so and Dillard was off to many other countries such as Iraq, Australia, Russia, China. . . . sharing his mastery of agriculture, animal science, crops, land and water use and conservation, often in very primitive and even dangerous situations. To read how Dillard progressed from one of 16 kids growing up during the depression on a dryland Nebraska farm, to obtain a PhD, become a professor, and an internationally recognized agriculture and rangeland consultant is a testament of one man's diligence to improve land use to feed people worldwide. I greatly enjoyed reading of your accomplishments. Well done Dr. Gates!

I enjoyed the reminisces of Dillard about his later life after the book Hay, Hell, Kids and Cattle
Gotta love it, great story from the service through life. Many similar experiences in my own military time. reading about Mr. Gates time in the Coast Guard with my father was a rewarding surprise. It was a nice break from my Cussler, Baldacci and Lee Child novels. Dennis E. Pangburn
"'AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED PAPA," is a vey accurate description of the scene in Custer County Nebraska, just before WW II as well as Post WW II. The County was just emerging from the Great Depression that devastated so many farm families in Custer County during the nineteen thirties. You will enjoy reading about Dillard's boot camp experiences and his tour of duty in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, his work for seven years in Oklahoma and his interesting career at Oregon State University as well as his exciting work in Rangeland Management in the United States and many foreign lands throughout the world.
I have enjoyed reading " AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED PAPA, " and would recommend this book to anyone who would like to know about or recall the 1940 time period right up to the present day. You will be glad that you read the book.
